‘FUN’ WINCH CHALLENGE - June |
|
Date: 13th June 2010
Trip leader: ‘Sav’ & team
Trip report: Gordon Jackett
Sunday came, we arrive at the farm, not too bad a day: a bit wet under foot. I took my truck up on the trailer, as Lex was taking his truck to give it a run and try out his new winch. Well, we would have a trailer to bring him home on (its a Jeep thing you know).
I went to take my truck off the trailer - bugger me: flat batteries! Some dork left the key on after winding the windows up the night before. I still can’t find him! Anyway, we pushed the truck off and then hooked on to it and towed it around and around till it started. Then it was down the road to charge the batteries up a bit.
Now on to the day. About 10-12 trucks (and a good lot from Marlborough) and after one of Sav’s in depth briefings we were off to do battle on the first 3 tracks. All were having fun winching and sliding around. On my first track I managed to break a steering rod. Luckily it was on a very slow part, just out of the creek. Bugger! My front wheels were pointing like I was rowing spuds. Wrong time of year me thinks. Anyway, luckily I had a spare one with me, so we put it on, and we were off like a rat up a drain pipe. I liked the 3rd track so much: I did it twice! No winching!
Then by this time the worms needed feeding, so after the worms were fed, we are off up to do another 3 tracks. The first track had a bank with a soft muddy bit with a bank with roots all over it. We had a backlog of trucks with a winch not working, another with a broken rope and stuck on a root and having to be winched back out.
But the best track was my track that I had the week before at the Winch Challenge. It was a really great track with trees, rocks, stumps, mud, gravel banks, climbs and, yes, roots again! I think everyone came out with a dent or two from that track. It was so good I just had to do it again.
Everyone enjoyed the day. Thanks to Sav and his team of merry men.
