TRIP REPORT: THE 4X4 CENTRE FUN DAY
Date: 17/05/2009
Trip leader: ‘Sav’ & Team
Trip report: Richard Exton
The weather forecast was not looking good for the 4x4 fun day. I said to Katrina if it’s pouring down we won’t go. Come the morning there was blue sky and the sun was trying to shine so off we headed for Kikiwa. Half way there the wipers were dashing across the windscreen as the heavens opened up I assured my lovely it was just a shower and it was going to clear. All I got was a disbelieving glare. Nephew in the back thought: “Great, more mud”. Anyway we got there on time and let down the tyres.
Sav gave us all a briefing on what the rules were. Drive between the green and red pegs more than one stop or back up and you’re penalized, get towed and you’re penalized, knock a peg over and you’re penalized. After looking around some of the tracks I could see me getting a lot of penalties.
Seemed to be quite a good turnout of vehicles, about 24 I think. Sav and team had done a brilliant job of setting up 12 short tracks getting harder as we worked our way through them. Lots of challenges, quite a few vehicles needing to be rescued even some rescuers being rescued!
With a shower of rain coming through every hour or so things were kept very slippery. By the end of the day there were a lot of muddy sections. The last event of the day was a timed course with pegs set out and a clover leaf pattern driven around the pegs. Some of it was done forward and some of it in reverse. Scotty stepped up and showed us how it was done, little did he know his hubs had been slipped out which caused him a fair bit of wheel spin. He caught up with the hub tampering culprit with a tackle. Anyway, we all got the idea of this event, half a dozen vehicles had a go, not sure who ended up with the quickest time.
The day certainly was very entertaining despite the weather being lousy. I’m pretty sure a good time was had by all; I know we had a good time; the nephew is still driving his family nuts talking about it. Thanks Sav and team for a great day.
