We all got up early and went down to the camping
ground just out of Haast, paid up our fees and off we all went. We went down the
Jackson Bay Road with lovely big trees hanging over the road like a tunnel. We
stopped to have a look at an old bridge which was left when they built the new
one on top. We also went past a bull on the side of the road eating scrub. We
got to a farm in the middle of no-where, on the flat area of the farm we went
across the Cascade River. Went though a forest and out on the flat again to have
morning tea.
Sandy made me a cake for my 15th birthday, which was
a really cool surprise; everyone had some cake (Thank-you Sandy!). After morning
tea we went down past a hunters hut and back into the forest again. We ended up
at the Hope River – it didn’t have very much water in it, drove along a bit more
and got to Barn bay for lunch. Everyone got out and had a walk around and something to eat; we were ready to head back by
the time the sand-flies caught up with us. We are lucky it was a beautiful day;
we agreed that it was the best weather we had ever seen for the trip. After
lunch we headed back to Haast.
But just one more stop: Jackson’s bay, man, that
place is so many miles away from any decent shops.
Thank you to Bob and Bill who organised the trip for
us.
So that was our day down to Barn bay.
