Following
a free coffee at the McDonalds Motueka we joined three other vehicles for a
leisurely 9am start. Leo, Sam, Miles and Helen, Byron and I headed up in the
direction of the Motueka Valley, Brooklyn area. It wasn’t long and we were into
4wd with clay tracks filling up the tyres.
We
grouped up on the airstrip and were issued various cutting tools by Gordon for
our first task of opening up a steep track on the property. Getting there
provided entertainment for some before we started to get to work clearing the
track of gorse and the odd boulder. Chris joined us for moral support and after
a bit of a workout on the tools we made it to the bottom. Getting back to the
trucks was actually the worst part as we had covered some ground. We descended
our new track which had a couple of tricky rocks and banks and then it was back
to the airstrip for a bbq lunch, we were all pretty hungry by then, thanks
Gordon.
We
then made our way to our next track. On the way Sam’s Landcruiser fell into a
hole which is where we spotted a small hole in his front diff, a small stick
came in handy blocking the hole and he parked up for the day. We continued
clearing a couple more tracks until it was time to get back behind the wheel.
Miles
lead us round some steep tracks and the slippery grass was not popular with the
Pajero. A quick stop at an up-hill bog was entertaining, plenty of mud,
winching, and Gordon even tipping his bike on a nearly flat section of the
track….
From
there we picked up the bbq and made our way down a steep and slightly slippery
track back to the start.
Great
day out, awesome site for some trips in the future, 4wding and a workout all in
one day.
