TRIP REPORT: LAMB VALLEY
Date: 1st August 2010
Trip leader: Scotty
Trip report: Vince Todd
So off we go, son Shane & myself, heading for Lamb Valley. I’ve never been there before but I had an idea where it was.
Once over the Hope Saddle we kept our eyes open for the sign, “LAMB VALLEY” which I was told would be there. On reaching the Owen River pub we decided we had missed our meeting point. This qualified me for the trip report, according to Graeme Nicholls.
On returning we found a group of trucks parked up under a sign saying: Glen Hope ‘NATIVE’ Sawmill. I now realize that because it is Maori language week that they must have changed the sign.
From there we made our way up to ‘The Top House’ site where native sawn timber is stacked. It took about an hour to get everyone up there and then we progressed to ‘”Cow River Hut” (this is according to Scotty & Graeme who told me the name with a grin on their stupid faces), this was our lunch stop out of the persistent rain.
Following lunch we made our way through a paddock and crossed backward & forward over a stream and at one stage I required a tow from our lovely trip leader & progressed to ‘Boiler Gulley’ aptly named after an old boiler laying in a paddock.
On our return the stream had risen and on a stretch of about 100 meters some of the lighter trucks started to float so required a tow from Scotty & Leo. I didn’t require a tow this time even though the water at one stage was lapping my front windscreen.
From here we backtracked to our morning meeting place, and after visiting the farmhouse Sav radioed the knowledge of 30mm of rain having fallen while we were there. It was a bloody good day in the mud for 10 dollars. I couldn’t take the kids to the movies for that. Awesome trip.
