Leatham Valley - Sept Print
Leatham Valley
Trip leader John Hodgson - Report and photos by Mark Amy
Sunday 26/9/2004

lined up - and drivers briefingLeatham Valley starting point was St Arnaud Turn off SH63.

Sunday 10am beautiful clear day about 30 vehicles turned up John called for all drivers to gather around for a short briefing.
Sarah produced a pink hat bearing sweets/minty's - well my minty had a ribbon attached to it, which meant I had volunteered to do the trip report.

We headed of towards Renwick and after about 5ks we turned into Branch River crossed the bridge on to Leatham Rd.
A dust blazing trail it quickly turned into if you could see there was water race on the left hand side a bit further up the road was the branch river dam again if one could see it through the dust .just before we entered Leatham valley we stopped to adjust tire pressure then were off again first river crossing at May stream no problems, pretty shallow. Carried on at this point I haven't even engaged 4wd.

Second river crossing Alan stream drove in about half way across I was stuck. Hit reverse. No GO then Steven pointed out that we were not in 4wd - engage give it another go - no, we were stuck - the water was too deep to step out into.

Well as I sit pretty close to the steering wheel, getting out of the window was a challenge. So I had to walk along the bonnet to catch a strop so kindly offered. Got back in, Steven had the PRS in hand called out ready "now". I hadn't shifted my seat forward so I could hardly reach the pedals. Well I was pulled out of the river.

Shortly after that we all stopped for lunch at Greigs hut.
While most of us stopped for lunch John and a few others headed further up the valley  the third river crossing was quite a challenge with a steep rock face to climb up out of the river where some vehicles needed assistance. A short distance further up the track we regrouped for a short coffee brake then turned round heading back down the valley. Just after the third river a message came across the PRS that some one had lost their glass's, but were later found. Off again heading for home.

All in all a great day out arriving back in Nelson about 6pm.
Thanks John
