Mainland winch competition series |

A report by Sav
After the “Top of The South” winch competition Brendon Ward and I have been continuing the winning “Jeep” way.
Myself, with Guy Griffith as winchman, and Brendon Ward / Delis Johnston (now known as “Woody” and “Buzz”…) set off for the Dunedin round. Their event had 4 night stages and 9 day stages…it was still raining back then I seem to remember – so the night stages where very dark and wet. The night went very well for both of us. We stayed on site in their clubrooms which were dry and comfortable. The morning round started off very wet – Woody was sent down the road to do 4 stages and it being very slippery we had a bit of fun but survived the morning in a good position. After lunch we swapped properties for the last few sections. All done – Woody came out 1st in Club class and we took out 1st in Outlaw class with 1st place overall as well.
Queenstown was the next location on the series – Sept 27/28 – this we took as a bit of a holiday over 5 days (be rude not to after going all that way!). When we got there they had 3 night stages which you could drive twice and 9 day stages. I had Jamie Gilbert as my winchman this time. Two of the night stages were very tight with the other one very fast, as were the day stages! We both ended up with very good results in Queenstown too – both placing 1st in class (it’s a Jeep thing…you wouldn’t understand…). That round conquered, we headed for home with thoughts now turning to the upcoming round in Timaru at the beginning of October.
