Nelson Fringe Hill area
15 May
We all meet at Para Para road at 10.00am and we were getting ready to
leave for our trip when Scotty launched a surprise attack on us to
check our equipment (trucks only)
After that we all headed up the Brook valley and turned left just
before the motor camp and headed off up the hill and drove through a
real neat forest on a tight winding track that was once used as a
railway for a mining operation. We also had to watch out for speeding
mountain bikers coming down the hill and eventually arrived at a
clearing called Third hut where we had our morning tea and saw some
good views of Nelson.
Then it was back down the track where we came upon the sheriff heading
up the hill on his mountain bike. There’s no getting away from him and
I’m stuffed if I know how he managed to get far enough off the track to
avoid getting run over; any way we carried on down then made a sharp
turn right and headed off to Fringe Hill where we got some excellent
views over Nelson, while eating our lunch.
Then we were all on our way down the other side and ended up in the
Matia Valley after crossing the river we drove along the valley to
Jacks paddock and crossed over the river and started our climb up Big
Hill though pine forest.
After a coffee break up top we headed back down the hill to come out at the Maitai dam and the end of our trip.
Thanks Murray for arranging it all with the Nelson city council
which I understand took a bit of doing and thanks Nelson Four Wheel
Dive Club for getting us into these areas where it would not be
possible to get to by our selves, thanks for a great trip Murray.
