The gathering was opposite the Reefton School, which is now closed. Seems a pity as there are some good buildings in good order. This was at the civilised hour of 11 am. Four vehicles arrived to join trip leaders Dell and Marie. Left pretty well on time on the run to Nelson Creek turnoff.

Turned left and after a short comfort stop at the Nelson Creek Recreation ground headed into Hochstetter Forest and on to the Lake of that name. Had lunch among a few sandflies and admired the tranquil waters disturbed by the odd fish rising. Drove out the opposite way for quite a way before turning on to Haupiri Road.

Then things turned more Australian as we progressed onto Kangaroo Road. Didn't see any marsupials as the road was named by miners fron across the Tasman! Lots of regenerating bush along with some great stands of Douglas Fir and Radiata. A lot of this area has been reworked for gold and we stopped to have a look at a rotary screen and conveyor that has been abandoned. A bit further down the road was the Notown Cemetary where we stopped for Afternoon Tea.

This had been a town of about 250 people mostly Irish which had mined for gold and supported 7 hotels at one time.

From here was a short trip back to the tarseal and return to Reefton. A great laid back day out.
Dolph and Gwen.
