TRIP REPORT: SOUTHERN ZONE JAMBOREE
Date: 27th - 30th December 2009
Trip leader: LROC Otago
Trip report & photos: Richard & Karyn Deck
We had a great time away with the South Otago Club who ran a very well organized rally. They are hoping that Nelson will host the next one! The weather was generally good and they have their own camping ground with very good basic facilities. The camping ground is 320m above sea level and has clean long drops, showers with hot and cold water. And a lovely swimmable stream that chuckles past.
We traveled on some great farm tracks which climbed as high as 1600m and even got snowed on briefly one day. Over the course of the rally we received some great views of the Southern Alps, Lake Hawera, Mt. Aspiring and Lake Cromwell. One day we’re buzzed by the helicopter belonging to the leaseholder (see photos). On another day the ground literally opened up on one of the tracks and a vehicle had to be towed out, and large rocks found to fill in enough for the rest of the group to drive over.
Each evening our hosts provided entertainment of some sort. One night we had a search and rescue demonstration with dogs scenting out the lost soul. Another evening we toured the camp viewing various campsites. One campsite had running water pumped from the stream into a sink using a bilge pump (from a boat) and a 12 volt battery. Another evening we had stone sawing...
Bob Dickinson and his wife from Nelson also attended Harald, so they might be able to pad out the story a bit. If I recall correctly he was the Sheriff on the final evening pimping on all those who dared to have a flat tyre etc... (I’ve asked Bob kindly, unfortunately no response - ed.)
