We have for the last week or so been making our way from South Australia to Perth via the Nullabour Plains- a long drive.
We have been driving 5 or 600 kms a day but it still took 5 days .
The road is tar sealed all the way and there is a fair bit of traffic on it - including a lot of road trains. The road trains can be 3 or4 trailers and up to 105 tons all up.
Their road works are something else - we were amused by one sign that said" Caution Road Works for the next 46kms project cost $36million " quite a big job by NZ standards. Their road construction is quite different - they dig up lots of clay, lay in on the road, roll and wet it and keep rolling till its dead smooth. Then seal directly on to the clay base. There is no sign of a gravel sub base or base course. All about using the available materials.
We have been following lots of other grey nomads who all seem to have big 4wd's and big new caravans - we feel a bit peasantish in our oz tent.
The word Nullabour is supposed to mean no trees but we drove across the coastal fringe and saw lots of gum trees.
Well must go and and have a coffee.
